| Open My Eyes
When I was in Kenya earlier this year, as I mentioned in a previous Today Counts, I was hospitalized for several weeks.
Although I had an amazing sense of peace during my stay, knowing that God was in control, I was aware that life can become very personally centralized when we are going through trials. All we often see is our situation.
So many people were focused on me. People going out of their way to make me comfortable and to visit me – which was really terrific and really appreciated – but all I wanted was to ‘get back out there’ and complete what I was in Kenya to do.
We had started projects and I was eager to follow through on them, but, unable to walk, I had to rest and be still.
Still, in the peaceful knowledge that God was in control – I had done all I could do to engage with others and set the projects in motion – now it was for me to allow others to oversee the work, pick up the baton and follow God’s lead. Time for me, at that moment, to take a back seat, not an easy call for me, but with God!!
Being still, stepping back, looking beyond our circumstances calls us to acknowledge and embrace, a whole new realm of living, of sharing, of excitement, of growth. It has been a privilege to watch the projects and people progress in my absence.
I do not write poems, but, in my stillness as I looked out at the forest through my hospital window, I began to write.
I will never be a Wordsworth but here is one of my little contributions.
Bigger Than Me
The day is slowly, quietly waking as a breeze blows through the trees
Awake, awake it calls there is much to do and see.
I will clean your leaves says the gently rain, I will wash the dust away.
But, wait, the clouds collect and bump with thunderous roar.
Then I will be a shelter calls the trees to those on the forest floor.
How often we remark there is nothing out there to see,
Look again, look again
Stop, dwell, listen and look with me.
The beauty of the songbird, the crickets chirping all around.
A metropolis of life, a hive of industry surrounds.
Open our eyes, open our eyes our wonderous God to all that you have made.
Open our eyes, open our eyes that we might see and realize
That life really is, bigger than me.
Love and blessings have a brilliant June
