| “I have been thinking about Solomon a well-known king of the Old Testament.
Just a youth in real terms, when he ascended the throne, a position he obviously felt out of his depth in. What would he do?
He could have ‘just winged it’ and hope everything would turn out ok.
Perhaps the words his father, King David had spoken to him, caused him to recognise that he needed the right help to govern. His humility took him in the right direction – to God – to seek the help and direction he so desperately needed.
In his humility, his plea was not for power, fame or fortune but for wisdom on how to govern justly.
His request please God and the Lord granted him his desire but also gave him what he had not requested – ‘Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honour—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.’
We do not always know how to navigate life but if we too will seek God’s direction and do what is right in His sight, we will be on the safest of paths.
One titbit of wisdom I have held on to during my walk with the Lord – Proverbs 3:5-6 – ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.’ God is faithful to His promises.
The person who penned this, King Solomon, had many issues to deal with during his reign, not least the well-known incident known as ‘The judgement of Solomon’, the baby and the two harlots – two women both claiming the child was theirs – read about it in 1 Kings 3:16-28.
Trusting in our faithful God to lead and guide us every day of our lives is not always easy – it can’t have been easy for King Solomon to request a sword to cut the baby in two and it share between the two women. But his actions brought out the truth and enabled the real mother to take home her child.
Proverbs 4:7-9 (Message Bible) ‘When I was a boy at my father’s knee, the pride and joy of my mother, He would sit me down and drill me;
‘Take this to heart. Do what I tell you – live! Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for understanding!
Don’t forget one word! Don’t deviate an inch! Never walk away from Wisdom – she guards your life.
Love her – she keeps her eye on you. Above all, and before all, do this; Get Wisdom! Write this at the top of your list; get understanding.
Throw your arms around her—believe me, you won’t regret it; Never let her go – she’ll make your life glorious, she’ll garland your life with grace, she’ll festoon your days with beauty.’
Wisdom – the principal thing.
Have a really brilliant journey of discovery this September.”
